Fundraising for Bondi hero Ahmed reaches over one, half million dollars

(MENAFN) Public support for Syrian-born Ahmed Al Ahmed, who heroically disarmed one of the attackers during Sunday’s mass shooting in Sydney, has surged past $1.5 million.

A GoFundMe page established in his honor has attracted contributions from over 41,000 donors, raising 2.3 million Australian dollars. The platform described Ahmed’s actions as “selfless, instinctive, and undeniably heroic, taken without regard for his own safety.”

Donors across Australia and abroad have contributed to assist Ahmed, who is receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, and his family. GoFundMe confirmed that funds are securely held during verification before being transferred to Ahmed. Among the contributors, US billionaire Bill Ackman donated nearly AUD 99,000 (approximately $65,000).

The shooting claimed the lives of 15 people after a father and son opened fire along Sydney’s Bondi Beach. One attacker was killed on the scene, while the other remains critically injured in hospital. Videos of Ahmed subduing one of the shooters drew international attention, highlighting his bravery and likely preventing further casualties.

Ahmed, 43, a father of two daughters, was shot multiple times in the shoulder and is being treated at St. George Hospital in southern Sydney. Australian leaders have widely praised his courage. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called him an “Australian hero” representing “the best of our country,” while New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described him as a “real-life hero.”

Religious and community leaders, including Australia’s Grand Mufti Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, also visited Ahmed, recognizing his valor. According to the Australian National Imams Council, Ahmed “single handedly disarmed one of the shooters. Instead of running from the danger, he ran towards it and put his life on the line for the sake of others.”
